Midnight in Mumbai

Press Release

Midnight Tea in Mumbai
12 Artists. 12 Hours. Once in a lifetime.

Mumbai – Visual Disobedience, a group of artists and innovators dedicated to creating spaces where daring, inspired ideas find a home, joins forces with Miko Kuro’s Midnight Tea to present a 12-hr-long “art ritual” beginning at midnight on Saturday, December 22, at the Tao Art Gallery in Worli, ending at noon on Sunday, December 23, 2012 at the Lakeeren Gallery in Colaba.

“Part art walk, part spiritual ritual, this epic tea party will cross the entire city over the course of one memorable night.” -Kickstarter

Conceptual artist and founder of Miko Kuro’s Midnight Tea, Natasha Marin, has hosted these unique gatherings at galleries and art spaces in Greece, France, China, Canada and the United States before bringing the project to India. Marin is a Cave Canem Fellow and Hedgebrook alum, whose poetry has been published in journals like the Feminist Studies Journal and the Eleven Eleven. She has been hosting Midnight Teas since 2008. The Midnight Tea explores the transformative nature of art and poetry through collaboration and ritual.

She’ll be joined by twelve radically different artists from the USA and Canada, who will be working across genres to bring about this one of a kind art experience.
“We each come to this project for a different reason—out of curiosity or intrigue, camaraderie or a sense of adventure—despite these differences, each of us will be called upon to use our talents and resources, to co-create the art ritual known as Miko Kuro’s Midnight Tea.” –Natasha Marin

Technology artist and professional software developer, Luke Moloney, will explore intimacy by creating ‘tea portals’ using live video recordings projected onto surfaces and ritual objects, while others like visual artist, Shelly Jyoti, will construct narrative experiences inspired by the history of indigo farmers using video installation and textile-based work.
The artists making up the “Mumbai Twelve” will work closely with participants to co-create four elementally-themed tea cycles (Fire, Air, Water, and Earth) using videography, ceramic art, performance and poetry. Remote contributors include Sammy Chien (Taiwan/Canada), Kenji Siratori (Japan), Shree Joglekar (India) and Jui Mhatre (India) who will create real-time sound art and performance pieces to be featured during the event.

Guests of this “art ritual” can expect to enjoy the stimulating, multi-sensory arena established by their [G]hostess, Miko Kuro and the Mumbai Twelve. For each 3-hr long cycle, participating Guests will receive special roles and assignments that will allow them to connect with each other using tea, time, and technology. Interested parties can RSVP through the event’s website (www.mikokuro.com) or watch the proceedings which will be live-streamed online.

This project is possible thanks to the support and contributions of many individuals and organizations including the City of Seattle’s Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, Artist Trust, and ArtXchange Gallery, located in the historic Pioneer Square neighborhood in Seattle.
